“Informal Education”, in the heart of Jesse Cohen:

A new environment of Apprenticeship

Creating a new educational system, based on Urban Design

While Holon is intended to be the Children’s city in Israel, its southwest district named Jesse Cohen does not benefit from such a good reputation. Well known as a problematic area since many years, the neighborhood of Jesse Cohen keeps raising the question of a better Future. Several initiatives were taken in this district in order to compensate or redress the disastrous academic level and low social class. While dozens of playgrounds were spread all over the neighborhood and placed in its smallest interstices; few institutions devoted for children and teenagers were also established in order to supervise the young generation of Jesse Cohen. Yet, the district suffers from criminality and school failure. Hence, the project is to re-invent an educational system, based on “informal studies” after school. The goal is to offer new opportunities to children and parents, to participate, learn, create and take part in the society. Reinvigorating Jesse Cohen according to the youngster population. Moreover, the district does not contain a public place, essential and central area for all the inhabitants. Hence, the project aims to create a new network of informal, participative and educational activities – based on a public place, accessible for everyone. Also, this central place would give access to a new and main axe that serves each school and institutions in the area, for the purposes of becoming a new pedestrian spine dedicated for children.

FINAL PROJECT - TAHANA MERKAZIT OF TEL AVIV

-       The New Tahana Merkazit of Tel Aviv, as a complete Open Space –

The concept is simple and radical. Keeping the buses platforms that surround the enormous building, while completely destroying the inner space of the Train Station.

Dark and hard to perceive, all this interior space spread over seven floors, is destroyed and compact to fill the three first floors located under the ground.

Hence,  we obtain a large and straight open and public place, that connect each corner of the Train Station.

Really efficient, the platform system located around this open space, is simple and allow us to turn around it, from the fourth, until the last and seven floor.

The idea is to bring back to this enormous building, an easy orientation and a large quantity of light. During the «Derive experience », we noticed that a huge amount of people are actually using the Tahana Merkazit as an main and central activity area. But it concerns unfortunatly only a specific part of the population that lives in the neighbourhood. Creating a really clear system while destroying the interior space and keeping the buses platform, would consequently bring back a human scale to the building.

The open air activities, dedicated to the inhabitants, are spread all around the beton platforms, all connected to each other.

Therefore, the Tahana Merkzit become a real open and green spiral in the South of Tel Aviv.

Women in the Tahana Merkazit: Dérive

Lugubrious, gloomy, insalubrious was the first definition of this enormous bus station located in the South of Tel aviv.

4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Outside, the sky is dark, and women are becoming rare in the area. Therefore, they are mainly using the main entrance ; abandoning the small alleys on the side of the building. This simple observation guided us to the theme of our Derive. How women are using the Tahana Merkazit ?

Once inside, the bus station is over crowded. It seems like the Tahana Merkazit just reached its climax. Friends meeting, family eating, women shopping, children playing around. Suddenly, this dark and huge architectural monster turns out to be a real local and community center, where women are feeling secure. Indeed, those women are coming to the Tahana Merkazit, as a pure social activity, as a proper entertainment without using at all, the transportation services located on the upper floor. Wandering freely and fluently around, they seemed acquainted to those ramps that were leading to tens of different spaces.  

Hence, the space perception is represented by a systematic « decoupage » between the large areas and the numerous ramps that leads to them. Each big central area is served by few low-ceiling ramps, that women use to stroll all over the station.

Despite our preconceptions, the Tahana Merkazit is alive, used, and warmly appreciated for its services, by a certain population group living in the area.
